Casement Window Installation And Replacement Services From Zen Windows

Casement windows are a stylish and practical option for any home. Originating from Great Britain and Germany, they are one of the earliest forms of operational windows.

Hinged on either the right or left side, casement windows feature a hand crank that allows it to swing open like a door. For easy access and operation, the hand crank is typically found at the bottom of the window.

Since there is no lifting or lowering of the sash, these windows are perfect for hard to reach areas.

Casement windows can be hinged on either side and can either swing inward or outward. Most casement windows swing outward to the exterior of the home, but in certain cases, an inward opening window is preferred. These are called in swing casement windows.

Another variation is the French casement window which consists of two panels opening inward. This style of casement window is becoming increasingly popular.

What Are the Parts of a Casement Window?

Casement windows contain many different parts to operate accordingly, including the:

  • Frame: Where the window permanently attaches to the wall.
  • Casing: Often, the frame is surrounded by decorative molding to seal the area between the frame and the wall.
  • Sash: Where glass panes are held; this part, as well as the frame, can be made from wood, metal, vinyl, and other materials.
  • Hinges: Because of their door-like function, casement windows need hinges to open and close.
  • Crank: A crank handle is usually placed at the bottom of the window, causing it to open when turned in one direction and close when turned in the opposite direction.
  • Stays: Additional hardware bars are necessary to support the window and ensure it cannot be displaced by inclement weather.
  • Latches: Casement window latches provide better security and are more difficult to break into.

Our installation professionals are well-versed in the mechanics of casement windows, making the job smooth and simple from the start.

When Should You Use Casement Windows Instead of Double-Hung?

  • Because casement windows are less common, they can cost slightly more to achieve the same level of customization as double-hung windows of a similar size — which leaves many homeowners wondering why they might choose casement windows over double-hung when they need a high-quality, operable window.
  • The most obvious benefit of casement windows is the ease of operability and how big an opening you can achieve. An entire casement window will swing out, creating an opening the size of the whole window. By contrast, a double-hung window will always have sashes blocking part of its opening.
  • A casement window can be customized to have nothing obscuring your view at all, making them an excellent choice if you want a view or a lot of light. A double-hung window will always be at least partially blocked by the structure of the window.
  • If efficiency is a high priority, casement windows win. The design of a casement window allows for a very tight seal along its edge, and a tighter seal always does better at keeping outside air out and conditioned air in. Double-hung windows can be efficient, but all things equal, a casement window will be more so.
  • When and where you should use casement windows versus double-hung windows also comes down to the aesthetics and style of your home. In older, more traditional-style homes, double-hung windows often provide superior curb appeal — but in more modern designs with sleek lines and less-ornate decoration, the simplicity of a casement window can’t be matched for exterior appearance.
  • The simplicity of casement windows means they can also be used close together more easily without creating a busy visual distraction — for example, if you want a line of windows in your dining room for an excellent view, but you want them to be operable and thus don’t opt for picture windows.

Casement Window FAQs

What are some of the benefits of installing casement windows?

There are plenty of benefits to having casement windows in your home. Due to their functionality and design, they are perfect for almost any room. Here are some of the key benefits of casement windows:

  • Maximum ventilation: Because these windows open wider than sliders or double-hung windows, they let in an abundance of fresh air, increasing ventilation and reducing energy costs to cool down the house.
  • Stunning views: Unlike other windows whose architecture can obscure the view, casement windows don’t have as many internal pieces between the panes of glass which allows for cleaner lines and a clearer, unobstructed view of the outdoors.
  • Enhanced security: Casement windows use a hook-shaped locking mechanism embedded in the frame to provide the highest level of safety for you and your family.

While all of these functions are incredibly important, keep in mind that casement windows will require unobstructed space in order to allow them to swing open fully. Depending on your home’s interior or exterior space limitations, you may want to consider other options if a casement window will cause interference.

When should a casement window be used instead of a double-hung window?

Because casement windows are less common, they can cost slightly more to achieve the same level of customization as double-hung windows of a similar size. This leaves many homeowners wondering why they might choose casement windows over double-hung when they need a high-quality, operable window.

Here are some of the advantages that casement windows offer over double-hung windows:

  • The most obvious benefit of casement windows is the ease of operability and how big an opening you can achieve. An entire casement window will swing out, creating an opening the size of the whole window. In contrast, a double-hung window will always have sashes blocking part of the opening.

The simplicity of casement windows means they can also be used close together more easily without creating a busy visual distraction. This is why casement windows are generally the preferred choice over double-hung for bay and bow window configurations.

How do casement windows operate?

Casement windows are composed of a single sash and are hinged on one side. They open and close manually using a hand crank that is usually located at the bottom of the window for easy access.

These types of windows operate like a door, swinging open and shut. Since they are fully operated by the crank, they do not require any physical force to raise or slide them.

Casement windows are ideal for providing air flow which can be regulated by how far the window is opened as well as beautiful, unobstructed views.

Are casement windows energy efficient?

Yes, a casement window’s construction makes it very energy-efficient. Since these windows have less moving parts and no sliding track there are fewer places for potential leaks.

Casement windows also have an airtight seal when closed, which eliminates drafts, and provide maximum air flow when fully opened, which will keep your home comfortable and lower your energy bills.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the advantages of casement windows over sliding or double-hung windows?

Casement windows are more energy-efficient than sliding or double-hung windows because the sash is pulled into the frame and locks in place, creating a tight seal that prevents energy loss. They also allow for significant ventilation because they fully open, whereas sliders or double-hung windows only open halfway. A casement window, like a sliding window, can provide an unobstructed view compared to double-hung windows, which have a central meeting rail. They are also very secure due to their locking mechanism.

Are casement windows more energy efficient than other window styles?

Yes, casement windows excel when it comes to energy efficiency because their sashes press tightly into the window frame and lock in place, creating an airtight seal. This prevents unwanted airflow that leads to energy loss.

Where do casement windows work best in a home?

Casement windows work best in areas where you want unobstructed views and maximum ventilation; kitchens, bedrooms, living rooms, and bathrooms are particularly good spots for them. They can also work well in tight spaces like attics and basements because the crank-open design is easy to use. Avoid putting casement windows in areas where you need exterior clearance around the window, like over a walkway or deck where the opened sash could lead to damage or injury.

Really pleased with the sales process, communication, install and outcome of our new windows by Zen Windows Carolina. Found them after a lengthy research process and very much appreciated that they did not mandate a 3-hour in-house visit to scope and price the project, like other companies did. They were able to accurately size and provide an estimate within 24 hours just by looking at photos of the home via real estate websites. Seamless process, measurements were quick and painless, install was within one day (23 windows) and communication with the team at Zen was always easy and quick. Very happy!!

Zen Windows took such great care of our Mother’s vintage home! Her father built it in 1934, with no power tools. Zen came and measured the windows very carefully and then created custom windows and guess what? No more drafts!!! We love the shiny new windows. We especially loved the work crew, brothers, who came to install them. They were very polite and hardworking.

THE VALUE that we received from these windows is truly equivalent to the price. These windows are quality material and have a lifetime guarantee. Now Mother’s house can still be a place for family gatherings for generations to come!

I never thought that getting new windows could go so smoothly. However, it did go smoothly! Getting a quote and product/warranty information from Mike was extremely easy. Ty brought a sample window by for us to see and touch. Erika kept us informed while we were waiting for the windows to arrive. Scott let me know when the windows were in the warehouse and then got our installation scheduled for the next day. We were expecting installation to take at least two days. Marcos and his crew got the installation done in one day and they did an amazing job. It's so nice to have nice clear windows to look through. Brian, the company owner, and Jan, a new sales rep, stopped by during the installation and gave us further confidence that we made a good decision in selecting Zen for our new windows.

The service from the company beginning with the phone call after I requested a quote has been excellent. What I liked about the company was there was no pressure once I received the quote. I had a list of specific follow up questions that were answered clearly. I was even sent requested documentation before I even made the decision to do business with the company. This is one of the reasons that I went with this company because everywhere else that I received quotes from would not provide me any information or documentation in writing. Additionally, the installers came on time and answered all of my follow up questions. I had anticipated the windows being installed mid January 2026, but they were installed ahead of time on December 31, 2025. I look forward to doing business with the company again.

I used Brian and Zen windows to replace all 33 windows in my house. But first I went through the trouble and headache of listening to the "low pressure" sales pitch from the other window companies. WHAT A WASTE! I contacted Brian and what a pleasure. The whole process was great from the quote through the installation. I totally recommend Brian for all your window needs.

First I must say it was a pleasure and absolute joy to work with Zen Windows. I spoke to Mike Knight and he was very professional and honest about everything. He named companies by name and their prices. It's really sad how much OTHERS up-charge just for their name.
Second, the product was ordered in a timely fashion. Before we knew it, we got a call for next day installation. I think the entire process took 4 weeks. EXCELLENT!!! The guys took care of installation within 4 hours and we are beyond pleased. Thad and the crew did an excellent job and we love the outcome. We will be using Zen Windows for any future projects.

Stay away from the BIG NAMES!! Go with Zen Windows for doors and windows!! The price and professionalism are beyond compare!!

We called Zen to get an estimate for a new front door, frame and storm door. Our experience couldn’t have been better. We were treated as if we were their most important clients from our first contact through installation. Our ProVia door is absolutely beautiful, enhancing the look of our home. The staff at Zen were extremely responsive, answering all of our questions with professionalism and patience. We were very impressed with how they would confirm and double-check on details to make sure we were getting exactly what we wanted. We have definitely found our go-to company for windows and doors.

An absolutely incredible experience all around! The communication was stellar from the start. No high pressure sale and it was so easy to sign off to get the project started. Their prices are more than fair and don't compromise quality of the project. Windows came in early which was a plus and they were quick to notifying me and getting the install scheduled. The installers were fantastic and so incredibly kind as they offered to help put my blinds back up for no additional charge. All around, I am so incredibly happy and so glad I chose Zen Windows! Will definitely recommend to anyone and everyone. Thanks again!!!

Zen Windows provided an outstanding experience in every aspect—price, service, quality, delivery, and installation—for the windows at our rental property. Ty Schwartz stands out as one of the best customer service representatives I have ever encountered. He was consistently prompt in providing detailed information about the windows and doors, including comprehensive videos explaining the materials used and the superior craftsmanship behind their construction.

Ty was quick to offer accurate quotes by researching our location, and the estimated price remained firm once accepted. After we approved the quote, he coordinated the installation team to take precise measurements, ensuring no price increases afterward. Scott Padgett led the measurement and installation team with professionalism, delivering excellent work on installation and caulking, and they left the site spotless.

Additionally, Natalie Zimmerman provided exceptional customer service by keeping us informed about delivery status and handling all paperwork efficiently. Overall, our experience with Zen Windows was fantastic. We will definitely turn to them again when we need new windows for our current home.
